CHANCE PHELPS, a former Craig student, died in battle in Iraq on April 9, 2005. He left behind a family and two communities to mourn the passing of this extremely likable young man. The 19-year-old Marine had only been in Iraq for a month before his death. Chance was described by his father, John Phelps, as having an irrepressibly comedic personality and a strong sense of patriotism which drove him to further the cause of freedom.
As a community we will never be able to measure the loss of this fine young man. We will never be able to assess what great things he might have accomplished here or elsewhere, what lives he might have touched or influenced, and what joys his life and living might have given to those around him.
This is the Cost of Freedom
